How much does an adjunct make?

Frankly, I don't believe what follows. But, I include it because it's of interest to many who visit this website: How much does an adjunct professor make?

I've taught at several institutions in the Mid-Atlantic and received compensation that ranged from $600 per credit to $1,220 per credit. I still have a day job, narrowing my teaching opportunities to nights and weekends. Twice I've taught 4 classes in a semester.

Seems like I might be teaching at the wrong schools.

According to a quick search on Google, the average Adjunct Professor makes $49,000/year.

My experience for a 3-credit course:

Northeast
Urban CC: $2800
Rural CC: $1600
State U: $2400
Private U: $2300

Midwest
For-profit: $2000

West
Rural CC: $1500

Through this website, I've gotten to know a few mercenary adjuncts who have created a "milk run" where they teach 9 to 12 classes a semester (2 to 3 per day). All receive benefits through their spouse's health care plans.

If you want to try this route, you can expect to grade a lot of papers, put in long hours, drive many miles, and earn roughly 60,000/year.

I much prefer having a day job, working 2 or 3 nights a week, and taking home and extra 2,000 month in adjunct pay.
