This is a heart breaker. I've recommended students speak to my chair regarding openings in other sections. It's hard turning people away at the door--especially those truly in need.

Wow. That is unbelievable! I'm amazed that you handled the situation so well. I would have been speechless. Nothing like that has happened in my classes, but I have had some awkward moments where students made (non-racial) inappropriate comments.

On the first day of class, I generally use an ice breaker to get things moving. After forming a circle with their desks, I ask each student to introduce themselves by telling the class three facts about themselves, one of which must be a lie. We then discuss which one of the three facts is the lie and everyone has a pretty good time.

But not this time. The fifth person to introduce himself, a man in his twenties proceeded to state three things about himself: each item a racist description of his lips, hair and nose, employing racially-charged language and culminating in a disturbing racist caricature.

All background noise in the class evaporated. I recall searching for an appropriate response. After a moment, I asked him, “Why did you say that?”

The young man ignored me and repeated his racist self-description. “Which is the lie?” he asked the class.

No one took up his challenge.

After her few seconds of silence he got up from his desk and left the classroom, never to return.

The moment the door closed behind him, the class exploded in a release of nervous chatter. We discussed the incident for some time; discussed the power of language and race in our society.
